A Washington Adventure Elopement: Artist Point Sunrise, Diablo Lake, and a Cozy Campground Evening

It’s not just about the “I do’s” or the first kiss—it’s about the quiet moments in between.

I don’t just want to show up with a camera; I want to show up for you.

Some elopements feel like a full-on experience. Not just a ceremony, but an entire story unfolding across landscapes, moods, and moments. This Washington adventure elopement was exactly that.

From floating on the vibrant blue waters of Diablo Lake to an intimate meadow painting session and a cozy campground evening under the trees, this day was the perfect blend of adventure, artistry, and connection.

If you’re dreaming of a unique, non-traditional elopement in Washington, this is the kind of magic that’s possible.

Hiking to Artist Point at Sunrise

The day began before sunrise at Artist Point, one of the most iconic elopement locations in Washington. Located at the very end of the Mount Baker Highway in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, this spot offers unparalleled 360-degree views without requiring a grueling multi-day trek.

With panoramic views of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan, Artist Point feels like standing on top of the world. As the first light broke over the mountains, these two shared their vows in complete stillness.

No crowds. No distractions. Just the sound of wind, the glow of sunrise, and the emotion of the moment.

There’s something about sunrise elopements that feels different. More intimate, more grounded. It’s like the world hasn’t fully woken up yet, and the moment belongs entirely to you. For couples planning an Artist Point elopement, choosing sunrise over sunset is the best way to secure privacy at this highly sought-after location.

Floating on Diablo Lake

After the emotional high of their sunrise vows, we headed deeper into the North Cascades to Diablo Lake. Known for its surreal, vibrant turquoise water, Diablo Lake is a must-see for any Washington adventure elopement.

Instead of just taking photos on the overlook, they wanted to truly experience the landscape. They rented a canoe and spent the late morning floating on the glacial water, surrounded by towering evergreen forests and jagged peaks. It was a quiet, playful moment that allowed them to just be together and soak in the reality that they were finally married.

An Intimate Campground Evening

One of the most underrated parts of this Washington elopement was the campground session.

Tucked into the forest, this part of the day was slower and more relaxed. No big agenda, just time spent together in a space that felt cozy and real. They set up a small painting station in a nearby meadow, spending the afternoon creating art together inspired by the mountains they had just explored.

As evening set in, we documented them wandering through the trees, dancing on picnic tables, and leaning into the in-between moments that often end up meaning the most.

Building time like this into your elopement day makes it feel less like a photoshoot and more like an actual experience.

How to Plan Your Artist Point Elopement in Washington

If this day has you dreaming of your own Mount Baker adventure, here is what you need to know about planning an Artist Point elopement:

When to Elope at Artist Point:

Because of its high elevation, the road to Artist Point is typically only open from mid-July through late September. If you want to avoid snow and access the main parking lot, late summer is the ideal window. If you are planning a winter elopement, the area is accessible via snowshoeing from the Heather Meadows ski area.

Permits and Passes:

To elope in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, you will need a Special Use Permit for your ceremony. You will also need a Northwest Forest Pass to park at the Artist Point trailhead. As an experienced Washington elopement photographer, I help all my couples navigate the permit process so you don’t have to stress about the paperwork.

Choosing Your Ceremony Spot:

While the main Artist Point parking lot offers incredible views, taking the short hike to Huntoon Point or exploring the trails around Picture Lake and Bagley Lakes will give you more privacy and diverse backdrops for your photos.

Make it an Experience:

Don’t just plan a ceremony, plan a day you will actually love. Whether that means canoeing on Diablo Lake, hiring a private chef for a cabin dinner in Glacier, or painting in a meadow, your elopement should reflect who you are as a couple.

I’m a wedding and elopement photographer and a wedding planner, which means I get to combine my love for storytelling and organization into something truly magical. I started photography because I’m obsessed with love—messy, adventurous, unapologetic love—and the way it shows up in every little moment.

When I’m not behind the camera or coordinating details, you can find me soaking up life’s little joys - hiking to the best views, indulging in way too much coffee, or dreaming up the next big adventure (Maui, anyone?)
